After moving to Edmonton more than a year ago, 13-year-old Suraiya Liapis will become the official national anthem singer for Edmonton Elks of the 2025 football season.

Settling in a new city is not always easy. Liapis and her family moved from the United States to Edmonton, where in November 2023, most of her mother’s family life was.

While singing for the elk wasn’t her first performance in a major sporting event, the nerves of excitement still emerged.

“I also have to learn the national anthem of France-Canada, and I have to sing in two games. It’s not that stressful because it’s just two games, but I’m still a little nervous because I’m not the best in French.”

Liapis kept singing because she could walk. When her family lived in the United States, she performed the country’s national anthem for nonprofits and several minor league baseball games in multiple venues.

Her biggest musical inspiration was country singer Kelsea Ballerini.

“I actually always wanted to be a singer…I’ve written a few songs and even recorded one in California. But it’s harder than I thought, especially now that I’m a teenager who can balance school and life in general. But I still want to keep going,” Liapis said.

Liapis said the French said the French were the top spot, but because she used to perform in front of many crowds, her trick was not to pressure herself and start practicing a few days before the show.

Liapis said during her performance days that she usually had some nerves in her stomach about 10 minutes ago.

“My trick is, I just let myself reach the highest tension because then when I really went out to sing, I wouldn’t feel it.”

Her first performance will be the start of the Elk season in June. The season ends in October.
