One person died and another was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition after the aircraft fell on Saturday.

The New Zealand aircraft and pilot owners Association (AOPANZ) says its members are “deeply upset” with a fatal accident involving a light aircraft that participated in the annual FLY-in of the association’s fall.
One person died and another was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition after the aircraft fell near Lake Hawa on Saturday.
Emergency services were called east of the lake around 1:30 pm.
Aopanz president Sue Kronfeld said the aircraft was among those who flew across the country to be part of the association’s event over the weekend.
“The association and its members are shocked and deeply upset about the news of the accident. Our deepest sympathies go to the loved ones on board.
“We cannot speculate about what went wrong. The cause of the accident is now for police and aviation authorities to investigate. Apanz will help the authorities in any way requested,” Kronfeld said.
A scene guard was placed at the scene of the accident at night and the civil aviation authority was investigating the cause of the accident.
