The government is looking at other countries in which they can process asylum seekers, Home Affairs Minister Yvette Cooper told Sky News.

Ms Cooper said she spoke to the Italian Home Minister about their agreement, which means that asylum seekers who want to settle in Italy will be processed in Albania.

Asked if she wants the same agreement for the UK, reports that the government looks at an agreement with Albania, Ms Cooper said: “We will always look at what works.
“There must be practical things that will work, not gimmicks.”

On a question about that, and whether the UK is talking to Albania or in any other countries about an ‘Italian agreement’, Ms Cooper said: ‘We talked to the Italian government about the arrangements they have, and we always said that we would look at what was working.
‘We are also talking to the EU commission interested in various approaches around Return Hubs, this is the kind of thing you are talking about.
“But our central focus is on the boundaries, the summit, the organized immigration crime summit and on the approach of the criminal gangs.”

The UK will host an ‘unprecedented’ border safety summit on Monday with Home Affairs and Law enforcement from more than 40 countries, Ms Cooper said.
She said the summit is needed because illegal immigration is a ‘global problem’.
“The criminal gang networks that end with people arriving in the United Kingdom extend through Northern France, through Germany, across Europe, to places such as the hills of Kurdistan or the money markets in Kabul,” the Home Secretary said.
“So you have to tackle it as a global problem.”
Ms Cooper added that the government has new agreements with France and that the French government has changed the rules, so that its police force will now take “action” to prevent migrants from crossing to the UK in small boats.

Sir Keir Starmer has promised to “break the gangs”, which, according to Ms Cooper, can be said by the 20% increase in migrant yields since last summer a 40% increase in illegal working attacks and a 40% increase in illegal work arrests.
