Allan, 51, fired a seven under Power 65 at the Mission Hills Country Club on Saturday, matching its lowest tour champions score, to reach 10 -under 134 and placed in position for its first title in the 50 and more circuit.
Allan only entered the field because Steve Stricker retired on Monday due to a bad back.
He accredited his Australian partner Cameron Percy, who shared the first round leadership and is now tied thirdly, helping him this week.
“It’s good to really be hitting the ball well,” said Allan. “I had a good first round last week, but when the wind got up, and it wasn’t even so windy. I fought with him last week and I had a small adjustment this week.

Allen has a single advantage over the mountains of the American label, which tied the tournament record for the lowest of 18 holes with a 63.
Neither Allan nor Ridings, 50, have status on the Champions tour, so they have additional incentives on Sunday.

Ridings, playing his second tour event, went up a shot in front of Percy (89), the American Jason Caron 68) and Steven Alker in New Zealand, the current champion of the Charles Copa Schwab, who combined with the 65 of Allan.
