Young fatal attack victim for dogs in Bay of Plenty

The victim of a fatal dog attack on Katikati was a small child, says a local Marae -oriented door.

The Tuapiro Marae Shaan Kingi Gate said a child’s death sent shock waves through the small Katikati community.

“It’s just … That’s what we call Aituā Ohorere, which is a true shock and tragedy that affect our community.”

Police said they were alerted to two people suffering injuries at 2:50 pm on Friday.

One person was transported to Katikati Medical Center in critical condition and died shortly thereafter. Another person received moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Kingi believed that the child was only four years old, “just starting his life,” but said in his few years, he had a huge impact.

He said the child was known as a “noisy, very playful, adventurous boy.”

“He built his reputation by meeting some of his neighbors and the community, and even being an immediate family (suffering), he really sent ripples through his neighbors.

“He was a loving, young and happy boy.”

Kingi said the community was involved in the affected Whānau.

“Submitting positive vibrations and prayers of love for our boy’s family, but also the family of the person who is recovering in the hospital at the moment.”

Kingi said it was too early to talk about how to prevent future tragedy, but said that teaching people about animal risks was important.

The animal management team took the dogs involved in the incident.

Police are asking questions about the incident on behalf of the coroner.
