The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commerce (MFAT) says that all its team in embassies in Myanmar and Thailand is safe and well, after a strong earthquake on Friday.
The 7.7 magnitude tremor killed at least 144 in Myanmar and nine in Thailand and overthrew buildings in both countries.
MFAT said it was “closely monitoring” the impacts of the earthquake.
“Our thoughts are with the countries affected, particularly the people of Myanmar and Thailand, where the damage seems to be more significant,” said a gateway.
There were seven New Zealandes registered in Myanmar and 161 in Thailand, who had received Safetravel messages, said the gate.
“Newly in the affected areas should follow the advice of local authorities all the time, including any evacuation orders. New Zealands should also leave their family and friends in New Zealand to know they are safe when they are capable.
“NeoZelandes who require urgent consular assistance can contact the 24/7 consular emergency line at +64 99 20 20 20.”
All his team in Yangon and Bangkok had been accounted for.
“We are evaluating the impact on our embassy operations in both countries. New Zealand will also be closely monitoring the humanitarian situation and response.”
It was feared that there could be thousands of dead, going through the strength and relative superficiality of the earthquake, which reached the heart of Myanmar at only 10 km deep.
