Auckland community groups gathered for an emergency meeting on the lack of youth housing on Friday.

Dozens of workers from the front line service and recently without -Teto Rangatahi spoke at Hui hosted by Mā Te Huruhuru and Manaaki Rangatahi at Campus Lifeskills in Māngere.

Although invitations were sent to all political parties, Green’s co-leader, Marama Davidson, was the only politician to participate.

RNZ approached the main representatives of the National Party to comment.

Louise Upston, a representative of the Minister of Social Development, said she did not receive an invitation directly.

“That’s it [disappointing]In fact, I would like government politicians to be here today to hear directly how their decisions are getting things worse for young people and how their decisions are going against crime prevention, violence prevention, “Davidson said.

“Why aren’t they here? Why aren’t your local parliamentarians here? Why aren’t they here seeing the beauty and solutions that community organizations have to offer them? I thought they cared.”

Manaaki leader Rangatahi, Bianca Johanson, said she was not pleased with coalition government interactions with community groups.

“Not at all, we had a HUI with Minister Tama Potaka and asked to inform him and update him about what is happening to Rangatahi … We were really disappointed that he was not able to move on with this relationship,” she said.

“We are in a crisis … so we call everyone we know in the sector and brought our Rangatahi so that we can develop a strategy to give ministers and ministries [of Housing and Social Development]. “

With New Zealand’s funds, Davidson said there was no excuse for the lack of unbridled housing.

“There has never been any excuse for anyone in this country to live with anything, less dignity,” she said.

“We have enough in Aotearoa to ensure that everyone has a home, what we have is an economic system that keeps some rich and keeps many, many, many more fighting.”

Many HUI speakers highlighted the strong difference between a ‘home’ and a ‘home’.

“Emergency housing, although it is necessary to answer the question of without -is not a sustainable and long -term solution for housing insecurity in Aotearoa,” said Manaaki Rangatahi’s gate, Brooke Stanley.

She said the without them, especially the young people, needed a house where they could feel safe.

“It offers no sustainable or long -term sustainable housing for communities that experience lack of housing and poverty.”
