An owner of a Alice Springs business was devastated after a large fire involved his business, destroying everything inside the building.
The residents were told that they stayed inside while the emergency services tried to control the huge fire that exploded in Alice Hosetech Industrial Supplies in George St around the 6.10 am on Friday.
A spokesman for Fire Services and Rescue of NT (NTFRS) said the teams found that the building was “completely wrapped in flames” and responded quickly to contain the fire to the main building, which suffered extensive damage.
“There have been no injuries reported at this stage,” said a spokesman.
“The fire is still burning, and NTFRS teams will remain on the scene to control it.
“The NT and St John police (ambulance) also attended the scene.”
The videos that capture the fierce fire have been published on social networks, showing that several explosions were heard inside the building while the flames rose through the air.
A person commented: “Wow, that’s a fire … I hope everyone is fine … feel for the people who have lost (sic) business.”
The business owner, Andrew Mowles, said he was devastated when he began receiving calls on the fire on Friday morning.
“Yes, only devastated: the city depends on us, I have 18 people with whom I have to try to find out what I’m going to do,” he said.
“I’m not just me, I’m the city and my staff. I’m already thinking, ‘What can I do?’ – There is no manual for these things.
“My staff is surprised. We have sent most of them home and said: ‘We will let you know what is happening.'”
Mowles said they saved all their fire trucks, but nothing was left inside the building and would take time before they could resume full trade.
“The police have the scene for two or three days, they will solve how it started,” he said.
“Hopefully people can stay with us, and we can return to the service as quickly as possible.
“I have had many support messages, so I hope they can endure us while we turn it. That’s all we can do.”
The roads in the area have been closed, while NTFRS teams put the fire under control and investigate the cause of the fire.
Interim Deputy firefighters officer Stephen Hunter said that public members should avoid the area.
“If you live or are working near the fire, stay inside with the windows and closed doors when possible and avoid any outdoor activity.”
